    Coastal Bend College is the proud recipient of the Children’s Learning Institute Grant made available by the UT Health Science Center.

    Duration of Agreement: This Agreement shall be effective January 1, 2014 and shall terminate on August 31, 2015. Either party may terminate this Agreement, with or without cause, upon thirty (30) days written notice to the other party. 

    The total value of this Agreement shall not exceed $92,000.00.

    Coastal Bend College is a comprehensive, public community college serving a diverse South Texas area.     Program Mission

    The mission of the Early Development and Education is to provide skills and knowledge for entry-level employment in occupations in the field of child development/ early childhood.  This includes jobs in child care centers, Head Start programs, preschool programs, private kindergartens and teacher assistants in public schools.   The program also offers 4 TECA and 2 EDUC courses that are transferable to university that teaches teacher preparation.    

    Summary of Why CBC is Qualified to Carry out the Project Successfully

                Coastal Bend College early development and education program is a small community college serving 3,800 students within a 9 county area.  The counties that the college serves are:  Bee, Brooks, Duval, Jim Wells, Karnes, Live Oak and McMullen and parts of Atascosa and Kleberg counties. Coastal Bend College is the only rural community college for these counties.  Coastal Bend College has articulation agreements with many of the area high schools.  Early childhood/child development has recently been an interest from Beeville ISD and Goliad ISD to develop an articulation agreement for early childhood/child development.

    Early Development and Education program offers the following certificates and Associate degree:

    Associate Applied Science Degree in Early Development and Education (see attached)

    Level 1 certificate – Child Care Provider Aide (see attached)

    Level 1 certificate – Basic Early Development – Marketable Skills (see attached)

    The certificates are stackable in leading to the Associate Applied Science Degree. 

    The problem that the applicant will address is strengthening the profession of child development/early childhood by recruiting a more diverse and talented pool of candidates, improving preparation, and improving ongoing support for teaching and learning. Applicant will recruit in area high schools, to promote the Marketable Skills certificate to junior and senior high school students.  The applicant will also promote the TECA and EDUC courses to students wanting to teach in elementary school.


    Summary of CBC’s Plan for the Project

                The applicant’s plan for the project is to work with area high schools that have child development/early childhood programs, schools that their teacher assistants need to return to school and area child care/Head Start programs to recruit prospective students for the early development and education program.
