Official
CBC Statement Pertaining to Governor Abbott’s Executive Order
3/20/2020, 5:33 p.m.
Dear Coastal Bend College Community:
Over the past week, Coastal Bend College has implemented several
measures and recommendations to help ensure the health and safety of our
communities as we attempted to deliver Career and Technical Education (CTE)
labs/courses. However, in lieu of Governor Abbott’s recent
declaration and the dramatic increase in the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases
in the state, we believe we must honor the Governor’s request to ensure that
each Texan does his or her part to curb the spread of the virus. CBC will
temporarily halt our efforts to deliver this type of face-to-face instruction.
We will resume our efforts to deliver CTE lab/courses on April 6 pending
further developments.
Here is additional information you may find helpful:
Online Classes: Online
classes will continue as normal.
Face-to-face Classes: All
face-to-face classes have been transitioned to online and will remain
in that modality for the remainder of the semester. Spring Flex II
classes are scheduled to begin online March 23. We have labs
available at each of our locations to serve students who need access to
computers and internet.
Coastal Bend College will continue to use Blackboard as the primary
online learning platform to facilitate the student academic experience.
Students experiencing issues connecting to Blackboard should
contact Cynthia Abrigo at (361) 354-2508 or via email
at cabrigo@coastalbend.edu. Students who have questions about other tools
and resources being used in their classes should contact their instructor for
further information.
Campus Offices: Offices
continue to be staffed from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. As we try to minimize traffic
flow and practice social distancing, we may adjust the number of staff we have
on campus. As such, the business office, financial aid office, admissions
office, and the administration offices will remain open. All employees (faculty
and staff) not on campus will work remotely during this time. However, we ask
that you call ahead to determine staff availability to effectively and
expeditiously assist you. Thank you in advance for doing your part to help us
stay healthy.
Registration: Summer
registration begins March 23. Advisors will be
available during regular business hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m.) Monday through
Friday. You can email questions about enrollment to admissions@coastalbend.edu. For questions
about financial aid, please email moralesn@coastalbend.edu. Summer classes
will begin as previously scheduled.
Computer Labs: Students
are reminded that designated computer labs remain available on during regular
business hours (8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.).
Continuing Education: For
more information on non-college credit earning continuing education classes,
please click here.
Dining Services: Will remain open at
this time.
Bookstore: Will remain open at
this time.
Daycare Center: Will remain open at
this time and will continue to monitor students per guidelines as provided
by Texas Health and Human Services.
Campus Spaces: The Library and the
Peter S. Marecek Physical Fitness Center (gym) continue to be closed until
further notice.
Dorms: Will remain open at
this time.
Campus Tours: No campus tours will occur during this time. We will announce the
times once we are certain we can offer these services.
Athletics: The NJCAA have
suspended all athletic competitions through the end of the Spring 2020 sports
season. Practices and workouts on campus or as a team are not permitted through
this period.
Precautions:
Wash your hands for 20 seconds
Use hand sanitizer
Avoid shaking hands
Stay home when you are sick and avoid close contact with those who are
sick
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
You are encouraged to seek medical care if you are experiencing symptoms

A message from CBC Athletic
Director, Paul Cantrell
"We are incredibly
disappointed for all of our athletes, but especially for our baseball and
softball programs which were showing so much promise in the early stages of
their seasons. We are thankful that the NJCAA is going to grant all
spring sport athletes an additional year of eligibility. This gives these
students to compete here at CBC or for three full-years at a four year
school. This was great news on a truly disappointing day.”
Release from NJCAA:
Following the recent
recommendations from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the
NJCAA has made the difficult decision to cancel all upcoming basketball
championships as well as spring competition, effective immediately.
"In light of the
progressive evolvement of the COVID-19 situation, the NJCAA has decided to end
all competition for the remainder of the academic year," stated Dr.
Christopher Parker, NJCAA President & CEO. "As an association, the NJCAA
exhausted all possible avenues to potentially postpone competition for both
upcoming basketball championships and spring sport competition. We believe
following the recommendations of the CDC is in the best interest of our member
colleges and our student-athletes."
Spring competition includes
all practices, regular season, postseason, and national championship play.
Regarding eligibility for
spring sports, no spring sport student-athlete who was enrolled at a member
college in 2020 will be charged a year of participation.
Along with the cancellation
of competition, all on and off-campus recruiting for all sports will be halted
until April 15 with further evaluation to be assessed at that point in time.
The NJCAA will continue to
monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes
available.

Coastal Bend College Students, Faculty, and Staff:
Yesterday, March 13, I met with the Cabinet, the Deans, and our IT
staff. Out of an abundance of caution, we decided to extend spring break for
students through Tuesday March 17. The Provost and Deans will be working with
faculty and staff on Monday March 16 and Tuesday March
17 in a manner to allow the College to resume
classes online, albeit a modified manner, while at the same
time acting prudently in the face of a wide-spread epidemic.
We are monitoring the COVID-19 situation with local officials
to ensure we take appropriate measures. To that end, the College will be
posting a contingency plan for the foreseeable future. We will post
this on the website and on social media. We are also aware that we cannot
move all courses to an online platform. We are taking that into account
and will include in our plan direction for our Career Technology
and Education (CTE) programs Monday evening.
We also know that some students will need computer labs to complete
assignments. We will be directing students to labs where we can
maintain monitor and clean periodically through the day.
I understand these past few weeks have been
challenging. Please be patient. Our immediate concern is moving
forward while we do our due diligence to ensure we provide a healthy working
and learning environment. However, anyone who does not feel well, is
running a fever, or may exhibit flu-like systems, please stay home. Seek
medical advice by calling your health care provider.
