Recognizing the Warning Signs
If you’re concerned that someone you care about might be at risk for suicide, pay attention to any changes in behavior, especially if these behaviors are new, have worsened, or seem linked to a distressing life event, loss, or change. If you notice any of the following signs, it’s important to seek help immediately, either by contacting a crisis hotline or another trusted resource:
- Talking about wanting to die or expressing thoughts of suicide.
- Searching for ways to commit suicide, such as looking online or purchasing a weapon.
- Expressing feelings of hopelessness or having no reason to live.
- Mentioning feeling trapped or in unbearable pain.
- Talking about being a burden to others.
- Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs.
- Exhibiting anxiety, agitation, or reckless behavior.
- Experiencing extreme changes in sleep patterns—sleeping too much or too little.
- Withdrawing from social activities and isolating themselves.
- Showing rage or discussing desires for revenge.
- Displaying extreme mood swings.
If you or someone you know is exhibiting any of these behaviors, don’t hesitate to seek professional help.
