Link to install Microsoft Teams on your computer: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams/download-app#desktopAppDownloadregion

(See page 28 of the 2023-2024 Catalog and Student Handbook )

If you are interested in testing out of the BCIS 1305 course, you will need to complete the following steps:

1) E-mail your petition form to the Site Director/Assistant Dean/ Dean /or Advisor and have her/him sign your BCIS 1305 Test Out Competency Petition Form .Two (2) signatures are needed from CBC administrators.

First, enter your information at the top of the form and sign your name. Second, e-mail the signed form to the first CBC administrator for their signature. Once it's signed and returned, you'll e-mail it to the next CBC administrator for their signature - so that you have two signatures from CBC administrators. Once you have the required 2 signatures and you've filled out and signed the top of the form, e-mail it to cbcproctor@coastalbend.edu

2)  Call the Beeville Testing Department 361-354-2334 (Mondays - Thursdays until 4 p.m. payments are accepted)  and pay the $25.00 Course Challenge Fee and get your receipt.

Purchase the SAM 2016 Instant Access code and start your practice training sessions to refresh yourself over MOS 2016.  There is a lot of material available for you to review before you test.

3) Go online to purchase your access code: ISBN# 978-1-305-88532-5

For Fall 2025 use the following site to purchase your access code:  (TBA)
Click on the Digital Platform - for $26.00.

The Institution Key # is T2030335. You will need this code to create your account. Then you will use the access code that you purchased before your account is created.

Guide to create your SAM 2016 Challenge Account. Important - if you already have a SAM/Cengage account, be sure to create a NEW account when you purchase the SAM 2016 Challenge Access Code for the BCIS 1305 Test Out exam. Do not use the same account you may have had for a course.
On 8/27/19 and 6/16/20 Competency Practice Exams were created. There are 100 questions on each practice exam which will help prospective examinees be aware of SAM 2016 Challenge ways of answering questions.

If you have problems creating your account - make sure that the access code that you enter is correct and you enter one character at a time. It's a good idea to copy the access code that you have from the e-mail and then paste it into a Word document - so that you can change the font type. A lot of times what you think is a 1 is actually an "l" or an I - capitalized. This makes it easier to read.
We strongly suggest that you take the MOS 2016 Competency Practice Exams 1 & 2 and receive a 90 or better and if possible go through Study Center area in the upper right side of the screen. This will be very beneficial to you. You can also go to youtube.com and look for Microsoft Office 2016 tutorials in Access/ Excel/ Power Point/ and Word - which can be beneficial.

If you are unable to access the "MOS 2016 Competency Practice Exam," please call CBC Testing Coordinator - Roberta Kreis - at (361) 354-2244.

(4) Use our on-line scheduling site - click here to make your appointment.
Select the Alice, Kingsville, Pleasanton, or Beeville site. Note, for remotely proctored exams - you can have a proctor at any  site administer the exam on Wednesdays. It doesn't have to be a specific location.

Spring 2024 Exam Schedule for each site

Please read the CBC Remote Proctoring Tester Information Page

Go ahead and make sure that your computer meets the system requirements and that you've installed the Microsoft Teams app to your computer before you make your appointment in CBC's Time Tap Scheduler.

There is also a CBC Remote Proctoring Acknowledgement Form that must be submitted before an exam may be proctored.

You will need to have a government issued Photo ID to show on the day of the appointment.

(5) The exam covers: Basic Computer Skills / Word / Excel/ PowerPoint/ and Access. The student needs to earn a score of 70 or better to pass the BCIS 1305 Competency Exam. There are 100 questions for the exam. The exam is not timed and can take from forty-five (45) minutes up to three (3) hours to complete - based upon the individual. Make sure that when you schedule your appointment that you schedule your appointment for a session that has at least three hours. Please be on time for the session and realize that you'll need to be completed with your exam by the end time of the exam session.

The exam is interactive - Example: A question may ask the student to change the font size, color, etc… The student will then have to actually go through the motions of making the change requested. There are not multiple-choice answers, for the Microsoft programs. The Basic Computer Concepts will have mix and match boxes (Example: Select one box on the left, then click the box that describes, or has components of the other, on the right). When the boxes have been selected a line will connect the answers. There are 5-6 pairs on these questions.

(6) After the exam, the student will be given a copy of their score report. The goal is to earn a score of 70 or higher,

The Testing Center will make a copy of the receipt(s), signed Petition Form, and score report for the testing files and will e-mail this information to the Registrar's office.

(7) The student will then request for the Testing Department to send their receipt(s), signed Test Out Subject Competency Petition Form, and score report to the Registrar's Office - located on the Beeville Site and ask for the BCIS 1305 course to be entered onto their CBC academic transcript.

The student may call the Beeville Business Office or Alice, Kingsville, and Pleasanton Cougar Center and pay the course fee ($180) for BCIS 1305 so that the course can be transcribed onto the CBC transcript - they will need to e-mail the receipt back to the Testing Office. If the student plans to graduate with an Associates of Arts or Science - then they will need BCIS 1305 to be transcribed onto their transcript - so they must pay the $180.00.

Or if they took the exam for Computer Competency to be transcribed onto their CBC transcript - they will not need to pay any additional fee.
Per Admissions Office:
Examples of Allied Health Programs that only require BCIS Test Out and do not need to pay the additional $180.00 are:
LVN to RN Bridge
Traditional RN
Radiologic Technology
Dental Hygiene

What is a correspondence exam?
A correspondence exam is an exam that a person takes at Coastal Bend College's Testing Center though they are registered for the course through another institution.

What do I need to do to set up taking a correspondence exam at Coastal Bend College?

Fill out and submit the Correspondence Examinee Request Form.

(1) First you need to call the Coastal Bend College Beeville Testing Center - (361) 354-2334 to find out if your correspondence exam can be administered at Coastal Bend College.

Is there a fee to take a correspondence exam? Yes. There is a $25.00 fee for each exam that we proctor for you.
You will need to contact the Beeville Test Center - (361) 354-2334 to pay the $25.00 fee with your credit card by phone before you make your appointment for testing.

(2) If the Testing Center approves administering a correspondence exam, then you will need to get their contact information. Also request the contact person's e-mail address and full name.

(3) The Coastal Bend College Testing Center will need you to fill out and submit the Correspondence Examinee Request Form. They will then create a file on you so that when your exam comes in they will be able to contact you.

(4) You will then be responsible for giving the instructor at your institution the Coastal Bend College testing center contact information. It is then up to the instructor whether they will mail or e-mail the exam to the test center that you request. The home institution must fill out and submit the CBC Correspondence Exam Check Sheet which will be e-mailed to the appropriate CBC site.

(5) Use our on-line scheduling site - click here to make your appointments. Please look at the 2024 Exam Schedule for each site for an idea of when exams are administered on each campus.

What do I have to bring with me when I come in to test? You will need to have Government-issued Photo Identification (driver's license, Texas ID card, Military ID, or passport) and any other items that the instructor has specified. Please be aware that it is the instructor's prerogative whether they will allow their exam to be administered off campus. The following is only for a few select courses: If you would like to test at a site other than Coastal Bend College, submit a request to your Internet Instructor. Your instructor will need to have the name of the center, name of the contact person, phone number, fax number, e-mail address, and address of the testing center where you would like to take your exams. If so, the instructor will then notify you and let you know their decision.

Late Arrival: Testing Services will extend a 15 minute grace period for all pre-registered examinees.

Examinees may only have their Photo ID and the aids approved by the instructor at their seating area in the Testing lab.

What are placement exams and why might I need to take one?

Students must be in compliance with the Texas Success Initiative (TSI), (Texas Education Code §51.3062) to enroll in Texas public institutions of higher education.
The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a legislatively mandated program designed to guide Texas public institutions of higher education in helping determine whether entering, non-exempt students are ready for entry-level college coursework in the areas of English Language Arts Reading (ELAR) and mathematics. Students are exempt from this program if they meet college readiness benchmarks on the SAT, ACT, STAAR English III or Algebra II EOCs, successfully complete the high school College Preparatory Course, among other ways (click here for a complete list of TSI exemptions).

Entering students who do not meet a TSI exemption will need to take the TSI assessment. Students who do not meet one or more of the established benchmarks of the TSI assessment are required to receive developmental education academic support as determined by the institution.

What are placement exams?

Students may be placed in college level courses if their scores on the TAKS, STAAR, ACT, or SAT exams meet guidelines for exemption from having to take developmental classes as per the 2021 TSIA/TSIA2 Placement Chart

If a student did not score high enough to be exempt from developmental education based on these exams, he or she must take the TSI Assessment exam.

How do I know if I am exempt?

If the individual is TSI Exempt based upon their STAAR - EOC, TAKS scores, THEA, ACT, SAT, or other college placement exam, then they will not be required to take the preparation session as long as they show proof of their TSI exemption to our Admission Office.

ACT - 19 English / 19 Math with composite score of 23. Scores may not be more than 5 years old.

SAT - prior to March 5, 2016 - 500 Verbal / 500 Math with composite score of 1070. Scores may not be more than 5 years old.
SAT - administered after March 5, 2016 - a minimum score of 480 on the Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) test shall be exempt for both reading and writing sections of the TSI Assessment; a minimum score of 530 on the mathematics test shall be exempt for the mathematics section of the TSI Assessment. There is no combined score.
TAKS - 2200 ELA with essay of 3 and/or 2200 Math. Scores may not be more than 5 years old from the 11th grade exit-level TAKS exam.
STAAR end-of-course (EOC) with a minimum Level 2 score of 4000 on the English III shall be exempt from the TSIA Assessment required under this title for both reading and writing, and a minimum Level 2 score of 4000 on the Algebra II EOC shall be exempt from the TSI Assessment requireed under this title for the matethmatic section. Scores may not be more than 5 years old.
GED - 165 on Reasoning through Language Arts (RLA) and/or 165 on Mathematical Reasoning.

If I am required to take a placement exam, what do I do next?
You must take the TSI Assessment. First you must register for the exam and then you must complete the "Pre-Assessment Activity".

How do I sign-up for the TSI Assessment?

The fee for the TSIA is ($30.00 / $20 for ELAR & $10 for Math) Advanced paid reservations are required before a person may take the TSIA. Check with the appropriate testing center to see when the TSIA will be offered and the procedures for making a reservation.

Mandatory TSIA2 Pre-Assessment Activity

It is mandatory for all first-time examinees to complete a "Pre-Assessment Activity" which consists of the following:
(1) the importance of this assessment, [Based upon your scores on the TSIA - this will decide whether you are eligible for a college level course or if you will need to take a developmental or preparation course - which will not give you college credit. A developmental course will help you build your skills so that you will eventually be able to take a college level course. These courses give you a foundation in the subject area that you need preparation in. The TSIA is very important and we want you to do as well as you possibly can.]
