What is a correspondence exam? A correspondence exam is an exam that a person takes at Coastal Bend College's Testing Center though they are registered for the course through another institution. |
What do I need to do to set up taking a correspondence exam at Coastal Bend College? Is there a fee to take a correspondence exam? Yes. There is a $25.00 fee for each exam that we proctor for you. |
What do I have to bring with me when I come in to test? You will need to have Government-issued Photo Identification (driver's license, Texas ID card, Military ID, or passport) and any other items that the instructor has specified. Only the items the instructor has specified may be in the Testing Room. No cell phone or other electronic/smart items will be allowed. If you bring in items that are not allowed - you must leave them at the designated storage area when you go into the exam room. Coastal Bend College is not responsible for lost or stolen items. |

Check the test schedule for your test center to see when proctoring sessions are offered. Each center has their own schedule. Go to coastalbend.edu/testing under “Additional Information” Click on “Exam Schedule”. Current picture ID is required for admissions into test sessions. If you are taking a CBC Course exam - there is not any additional exam fee that you will need to pay. Examiner on appropriate site should be contacted for appointment if you have trouble using our Online scheduling site. Each test site maintains its own test schedule. Please be aware that it is the instructor's prerogative whether they will allow their exam to be administered off campus. The following is only for a few select courses: If you would like to test at a site other than Coastal Bend College, submit a request to your Internet Instructor. Your instructor will need to have the name of the center, name of the contact person, phone number, fax number, e-mail address, and address of the testing center where you would like to take your exams. The instructor will then contact that testing center to see if they are willing to administer exams for Coastal Bend College. If so, the instructor will then notify you and let you know their decision. Examinees may only have their Photo ID and the aids approved by the instructor at their seating area in the Testing lab. |
The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state-required assessment test to determine college readiness in reading, writing and math. All new CBC students are required to take the TSI Assessment prior to enrolling in classes unless you are exempt, complete or pursuing a Level I certificate.
Remote Testing Options available for TSIA2 and BCIS Test Out exams only.
TSIA2 exam fees - ELAR - $20.00 / MATH - $10.00 / Option for Remote Testing with proctoring service - Examity - $25.00 proctoring fee per session paid directly to Examity.
IMPORTANT: Starting January 11, 2021, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board revised the standards for the TSI testing in Texas. There will be an updated Texas Success Initiative Assessment 2.0 (TSIA2) will take the place of the current TSI Assessment. The TSIA2 will have the Reading and Writing combined into one section which will be called the English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) section. The Reading and Writing will NO longer be offered as separate testing sections. There are no changes to the Mathematics section. All TSI Assessment scores are valid for 5 years from the date you took the exam.
Not planning to be a CBC student - be aware that CBC will administer the TSIA2 exam to only our CBC students during May - August - due to the high volume of traffic during this time. September - April we will be glad to administer the TSIA2 exam to non-CBC students.
1. Are you TSI Exempt? Please review TSI Exemptions. If you are exempt - submit your paperwork to the Admissions office at admissions@coastalbend.edu. 2. Call the Beeville Test Center (361) 354-2334, Monday - Friday - 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. and pay the TSI Fee. TSI ELAR - $20.00 / TSI MATH - $10.00 - Total of $30.00 for both. No refunds. [During CBC Finals and Midterms, TSIA2 and BCIS Test Out exams will not be administered.] 3. After payment, you'll receive an e-mail from the Test Center to complete the Mandatory TSIA2 Pre-Assessment Activity and submit the appropriate TSI Voucher Request Form. These links will be in the e-mail sent to you. When you click on the Mandatory TSIA2 Pre-Assessment Activity link - you'll first create your account with Accuplacer. Then when you login - there will be an option to choose a practice exam. Select - Texas Success Initiative 2.0 Pre-Assessment Activity (TSIA2-PAA). Turn off your pop-up blocker on your browser so that you'll be able to do the two practice exams. Be aware that the examinee must forward the e-mail that they receive after they complete the new TSI Pre-Assessment Activity - showing that they've completed it to CBCProctor@coastalbend.edu before they will be allowed to test. If the examinee is testing with a CBC TRIO advisor - they must e-mail the proof of completion to their TRIO Advisor. 4. After you've submitted the above, the voucher will be created and you'll receive a second e-mail with your voucher information along with instructions on how to make your appointment for testing - whether with CBC or with the Proctoring Service - Meazure Learning 5. TSIA2 IN Person Testing at CBC is conducted on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Fridays. TSI Assessment: Online TestingCBC is offering TWO options for taking the TSI Assessment remotely:Option 1: Take the TSI Assessment through a program called Meazure Learning which provides an online proctor for you while you take the assessment. The proctors are available 24 hours, 7 days a week. The proctor fee is $28 and you pay directly to Meazure Learning. STEP 1: Contact the CBC Testing Center and indicate you are interested in taking the TSI Assessment through Meazure Learning. STEP 2: Once approved by the CBC Testing Center, you will receive an email from ACCUPLACER with your voucher code. This voucher code will allow you to schedule and take your exam. STEP 3: Click the Meazure Learning link in the email which you need for the Meazure Learning registration page. Enter your first name, last name, email, and click "register" STEP 4: Once you are registered, you will receive a confirmation email with login credentials from Meazure Learning. You will then log into the Meazure Learning dashboard. Next, you will set-up a profile and schedule your exam using the voucher code provided. TSI Assessment: In-Person Testing
STEP 1: Contact the CBC Testing Department to schedule your exam. When you call, the testing services staff will need to verify that you have completed the Mandatory TSIA2 Pre-Assessment Activity

STEP 4: Review schedule below based on the CBC location that is closest to you. TSIA2 In-Person Testing is administered at CBC Test Centers on multiple days during the week.
CBC Test Center Exam Schedule
The exam is not timed. For each section, it may take an individual anywhere from one (1) hour to three (3) hours to complete a section. So if you need to take the complete exam, you may take anywhere from three (3) hours to six (6) hours to complete your exam. You will want to complete the exam within the week that you start the exam so that your exam information isn't lost over the weekend when the system is updated.
On the day of your exam, please bring a Photo ID and CBC ID number with you. If you are a prospective student, please complete the Apply Texas Application to obtain a CBC ID. Please keep in mind the Apply Texas application may take up to five (5) business days to process.
Prior to the administration of your exam, all personal items must be left in a designated area away from the seating area in the testing room. No cell phones, smart devices, smart watches, electronics, books, notes, purses, bags are allowed on the examinee while testing.

Do I have to take the TSI Assessment?
Yes, unless you are exempt, complete or pursuing a Level I certificate. Please review the TSI Exemptions to see if you qualify for an exemption.
What is a Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA) and do I have to do it?
If you are an incoming college student in Texas, the State of Texas requires ALL students to complete a Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA) before taking the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment. For students retesting, the PAA is not required. After you complete the PAA, you will receive an email with a Certificate of Completion; make sure you save this email for your records as we may require you to show proof of completion.

TSI Exemptions
You may be exempt from taking the TSI2 exam, please refer to the information below:
*Graduated with an associate or bachelor's degree; or
*Have earned a C or higher in a college-level course at an accredited institution of higher education; or
*Previously attended college and have been determined to have met college readiness standards by that institution (must show proof with official transcript); or
*Student who is enrolling in a Level I certificate program and are taking courses ONLY in the certificate plan; or
*Are serving on active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States, the Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the US and have been serving for at least three (3) years preceding enrollment; or
*On or after August 1, 1990, were honorably discharged, retired, or released from active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States, the Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the US; or
*You have completed the SAT, ACT, or other approved assessment exam with the minimum sore needed for a TSI exemption.
Effective May 12, 2021 - students who meet the college readiness benchmarks on the state's approved high school equivalency (HSE) tests will qualify for a TSI exemption.
GED: A minimum score of 165 on the Mathematical Reasoning subject test shall be exempt for mathematics.
A minimum score of 165 on the Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) subject test shall be exempt for English Language Arts Reading (ELAR)
HiSET: A minimum score of 15 on the Mathematics subtest shall be exempt for mathematics.
A minimum score of 15 on the Reading subtest and a minimum score of 15 on the Writing subtest, including a minimum score of 4 on the essay, shall be exempt for English Language Arts Reading (ELAR).
The high school equivalency test exemptions are valid up to five (5) years from date of testing. While the date of testing can be anytime within the five (5) year time frame, applicability for TSI purposes and placements starts 5/12/21. HiSET will no longer administer its test after 8/31/21. Therefore, HiSET scores with test administration dates after 8/31/21 will no longer be useable for the TSI exemption. However, HiSET college-readiness scores with test dates on or prior to 8/31/21 will still be usable up to five (5) years from date of testing.

Payment of $30.00 will need to be paid to Coastal Bend College's Testing Department. E-mail Roberta Kreis - Testing Coordinator & Sandra Hadid - Testing Specialist (kreisr@coastalbend.edu; smendez@coastalbend.edu ) a day and approximate time (Central US time zone for Texas) that you would be available to meet virtually through the video conferencing application - Lifesize.
The best time to meet through Lifesize is 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. (Central Standard Time) (Tx) Monday or Wednesday,
We will send you a Lifesize meeting link by e-mail once a day and time has been chosen that is convenient for both parties.
When the Lifesize meeting takes place, the CBC Test Center will ask for credit card number/expiration date/ and security code of credit card - so that we can enter that information into our credit card machine and create a receipt.
Make sure that the credit card being used has been approved for international purchases.

Meazure Learning Testing Service - Go to the Meazure Learning Student Site - to make sure that your laptop or desktop computer that has a web camera and microphone, meets the system requirements before you make your reservation. Also review the student video from Meazure Learning (a secure online proctoring service) - so that you will understand what is required to have your exam monitored and proctored using the Meazure Learning site. You will pay the Proctoring Service - Examity - a $28.00 fee through their website when you schedule your appointment to test.
Prior to your testing appointment, go to https://www.accuplacer.org and click on the Verify System button to make sure the computer you will use for testing meets TSIA2/ACCUPLACER system requirements to take a test.
Dear Internet, Distance Learning, Hybrid, and Lecture Course Instructors:
Please make sure that you let your students know that they are responsible for scheduling their exams through our Online Scheduling site for testing. Appointments need to be made at least 24 hours in advance. The Test Centers are open for In-Person testing for online course, TSIA2, BCIS test out, and correspondence exams - there will be In-Person testing on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. There is limited seating for In-Person testing at our CBC centers.
If you need to send attachments - please e-mail the attachments to cbcproctor@coastalbend.edu and kreisr@coastalbend.edu. Then they will reach each of our CBC testing staff.

Steps to make an appointment for the TSIA2 - please do the following:
CBC is offering two remote proctoring options for our students who need to take the TSIA2. This is the safest way to protect our students. For details review the TSIA Request for Remote Virtual Proctoring Vouchers site. We also administer the exam in-person at a test center for each location.

(1) Pay the TSIA fee - ($10 for TSIA2 Math, $20.00 for TSIA2 ELAR (English Language Arts and Reading), - total of $30.00 if you will be taking the complete exam)

(2) Complete the TSIA2 Pre-Assessment Activity - which is mandatory - New 2022 Mandatory Pre-Assessment Activity . And fill out the request for voucher form. please review the site and select the appropriate form.
(3) If you will be using Meazure Learning Proctoring Service - you will make your appointment with them through their website. Look at your Notification of Remote Voucher for more details.

If you are not able to test remotely because you do not have a computer or internet, then you'll submit the - CBC In-Person Voucher Request Form along with the Pre-Assessment Activity Certificate after you've paid. Then the voucher/(s) will be e-mailed to you so that you can then do the following:
Once you've paid the fee and received your receipt #, completed the TSIA2 Pre-Assessment Activity New 2022 Mandatory Pre-Assessment Activity, and received your Voucher information - please go to the CBC Online Scheduling Site.
You will first Register - to create an account / then Click Login and enter your e-mail address and the password that you created.
Select your CBC Test Site / Session or Sessions / and then enter your information. For the Exam Type - enter TSIA2. Then in the Course Information - you will enter TSIA2- Then in the TSI field- you will enter " TSIA2 - and section /Date of when payment was made / Receipt # / Amount paid / and that you've filled out the TSIA2 request for voucher and completed the TSIA2 Pre-Assessment Activity.
Realize that appointments are made on a paid, first-come, first-serve basis.
After you've paid, filled out the TSIA2 request for voucher, and completed your TSIA2 Pre-Assessment Activity and selected your test date you will want to review the TSIA2 information at www.coastalbend.edu/testing Scroll down under “Additional Information” click on “Assessment Practice Exams”. This site has a web app that you may use to practice for the exam. It also has tutorial videos in Mometrix that you may review for the exam.
If you will be a Coastal Bend College student - you need to fill out and submit your Apply Texas Application (which may take up to 5 business days before CBC receives) so that a file is created for you. You CBC ID# will be e-mailed to you from the Admissions Office. You will need to know this number for your TSIA2.
(4) On your scheduled test date - you will need to have Photo ID (Driver's License, Texas ID Card, etc....) and know your CBC ID# if you will attend Coastal Bend College or your Social Security Number - if you will not be attending Coastal Bend College.
Make sure that you are on time for your scheduled appointment and have your proper Photo ID. If you bring any personal items (purses, cell phones, smart devices, electronics, books, bags, etc...) be aware that the items are not allowed by your seat while testing. There are designated areas at each site where your personal items will need to be stored.

What are placement exams and why might I need to take one?
Students must be in compliance with the Texas Success Initiative (TSI), (Texas Education Code §51.3062) to enroll in Texas public institutions of higher education.
The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a legislatively mandated program designed to guide Texas public institutions of higher education in helping determine whether entering, non-exempt students are ready for entry-level college coursework in the areas of English Language Arts Reading (ELAR) and mathematics. Students are exempt from this program if they meet college readiness benchmarks on the SAT, ACT, STAAR English III or Algebra II EOCs, successfully complete the high school College Preparatory Course, among other ways (click here for a complete list of TSI exemptions).
Entering students who do not meet a TSI exemption will need to take the TSI assessment. Students who do not meet one or more of the established benchmarks of the TSI assessment are required to receive developmental education academic support as determined by the institution.
What are placement exams?
Students may be placed in college level courses if their scores on the STAAR, ACT, or SAT exams meet guidelines for exemption from having to take developmental classes as per the TSI Placement Chart- 2024 June
If a student did not score high enough to be exempt from developmental education based on these exams, he or she must take the TSI Assessment exam.
How do I know if I am exempt?
If the individual is TSI Exempt based upon their STAAR - EOC, TAKS scores, THEA, ACT, SAT, or other college placement exam, then they will not be required to take the preparation session as long as they show proof of their TSI exemption to our Admission Office.
ACT - prior to February 15, 2023 - 19 English / 19 Math with composite score of 23. Scores may not be more than 5 years old.
ACT - administered after February 15, 2023 -– combined score of 40 E+R, Score of 22 on Math
SAT - prior to March 5, 2016 - 500 Verbal / 500 Math with composite score of 1070. Scores may not be more than 5 years old.
SAT - administered after March 5, 2016 - a minimum score of 480 on the Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) test shall be exempt for both reading and writing sections of the TSI Assessment; a minimum score of 530 on the mathematics test shall be exempt for the mathematics section of the TSI Assessment. There is no combined score.
STAAR end-of-course (EOC) with a minimum Level 2 score of 4000 on the English III shall be exempt from the TSIA Assessment required under this title for both reading and writing, and a minimum Level 2 score of 4000 on the Algebra II EOC shall be exempt from the TSI Assessment required under this title for the mathematic section. Scores may not be more than 5 years old.
GED - 165 on Reasoning through Language Arts (RLA) and/or 165 on Mathematical Reasoning.

If I am required to take a placement exam, what do I do next?
You must take the TSI Assessment. First you must register for the exam and then you must complete the "Pre-Assessment Activity".
How do I sign-up for the TSI Assessment?
The fee for the TSIA is ($30.00 / $20 for ELAR & $10 for Math) Advanced paid reservations are required before a person may take the TSIA. Check with the appropriate testing center to see when the TSIA will be offered and the procedures for making a reservation.
Click on the coastalbend.edu/testing Scroll down under Additional Information and select Exam Schedule to see the testing schedules for each site.
Then go to the online scheduling site - https://bookcbc1.timetap.com/

Once you've (1) paid the fee and received your receipt # and completed the (2) Mandatory TSIA2 Pre-Assessment Activity and (3) voucher request form - please go to the CBC Online Scheduling Site.
You will first Register - to create an account / then Click Login and enter your e-mail address and the password that you created.
Select your CBC Test Site / Session or Sessions / and then enter your information. Select the Exam Type- either Remote CBC Proctoring - TSIA2 Exam or In-Person - TSIA2 Testing. Then in the TSI field- you will enter " TSI - and section /Date of when payment was made / Receipt # / Amount paid / and that you've completed the TSI Pre-Assessment Activity.
Realize that you may need to schedule for more than one session to complete both areas of the TSI. A person may take anywhere from one to three hours per section to complete the TSI. There are two sections to the TSIA2 - ELAR and Math.
When the prospective TSIA examinee contacts the testing center, they will complete [Starting 11/16/20 - The TSI Pre-Assessment Activity ]
Mandatory TSIA2 Pre-Assessment Activity
It is mandatory for all first-time examinees to complete a "Pre-Assessment Activity" which consists of the following:
(1) the importance of this assessment, [Based upon your scores on the TSIA - this will decide whether you are eligible for a college level course or if you will need to take a developmental or preparation course - which will not give you college credit. A developmental course will help you build your skills so that you will eventually be able to take a college level course. These courses give you a foundation in the subject area that you need preparation in. The TSIA is very important and we want you to do as well as you possibly can.]

(3) course options, and [Coastal Bend College offers various course options: NCBO - Non-Course Based course - which is a non-semester length course delivered in an intense workshop setting, Integrated Course - which is a course that integrates two areas - such as Reading and Writing together so that a student gets two courses for the time and price of one course,Lecture courses (class-room style course with instructor - face-to-face); Distance Learning courses (class-room setting, but video cameras and microphones link you to other sites with other students. The instructor may move around from site-to-site to have face time with each area); Internet courses (do your course work from home, but some courses may have you take a proctored exam at a CBC site).

It is shown that people who prepare for the exam in advance do better, than those who do not prepare.
We want our students to succeed and do as well as they possibly can, so our staff will be taking the time to make sure that all of our first-time college students get off to the right start at Coastal Bend College.
If the individual does not complete the "Pre-Assessment Activity", they will not be allowed to take the TSIA.
What do I bring with me on the day of the exam?
You will need to have a (1) Photo ID (this may be a Texas ID card, Driver's license, or Passport - if you do not have one of these forms of photo ID - you may print out the TSI Assessment ID Form TSI Assessment ID form - have it notarized and then bring this to the testing department as photo identification.) and (2) Coastal Bend College ID #. To create a Coastal Bend College ID - you must first fill out the application for Coastal Bend College - GoApplyTexas you will receive an e-mail with your Coastal Bend College ID Number about five business days after you submit the Apply Texas Application.
No personal items are allowed in the testing area. No cell phones, electronics, books, notes, calculators, purses, bags, smart devices etc...are allowed in the testing area. No weapons are allowed in the Testing Center.

The TSIA2 Test launched on January 11, 2021. If you did not complete all portions of your TSIA exam by December 2020 - then you'll want to study for the TSIA2 exam. To study for the TSIA2 exam - go to the Free Study App and after you've created your account and signed in - select "Texas Success Initiative Assessments 2.0 (TSIA2). The TSIA2 exam will cover - English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR). The TSIA2 ELAR test measures your college readiness in reading and writing. It includes texts of different lengths that represent a variety of subjects and complexity levels. The reading-focused questions measure your ability to analyze text and synthesize information, while the writing-focused questions measure your ability to revise and edit text. Mathematics- The TSIA2 Mathematics test measures your college readiness in mathematics. It includes questions that emphasize applied reasoning skills, fluency with mathematical procedures, and conceptual understanding. |

TSI Testing
All students must take the TSI Assessment in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Students may sign up for a testing day in the Cougar Center at any Coastal Bend College campus.
TSI Testing Exemptions
Prior coursework and/or test scores can exempt students from taking the TSIA2 Assessment. For more information, please review the 2024 Placement Chart.
TSIA2 Placement and Coursework
Students will be provided with an immediate print out of results after taking the TSIA2 Assessment. These scores are used to place the student into his/her college courses. All incoming freshman should visit with his/her assigned advisor when enrolling in classes. Students, check your school email or campus connect for your assigned advisor. Be aware that all TSI Centers in Texas have the ability to pull your TSI scores even if you tested at another institution as long as you fill out and sign their TSI Cross Institution ISR Reporting Release Form. Only if the institution that you will be attending does not administer the TSI Assessment will you need to fill out and request a TSI report from CBC. Requests will be processed within two to five business days of when we receive the request at our Beeville Testing Office - except during our CBC registration periods (then processing requests will take a week from the date we receive the request.) |
