Vocational Nursing Program Information

Requirements for the program include:

• Satisfactory scores on entrance exam (TEAS)
• TSI complete for Reading and Writing
• Successful completion of prerequisite courses with a "C" or better
• Cleared background check
• Completion of all immunizations as required by the Texas Department of State Health Services
• Current CPR certification for Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association
• Selections into the program. The selection committee will select applicants for the program according to a scoring system.  Points are scored for applicant's GPA on prerequisite courses, TEAS score, and completion of coursework. Selections are competitive.

Application procedure:

• Apply for admission to the college by following the steps at: coastalbend.edu/future/
• Schedule and take the TEAS exam. An overall score of 55% with a minimum score of 40 in each category (Math, Reading, Science, Writing) is required to receive the application link.
• Complete the online application by the deadline. You will need to upload your unofficial transcripts in the application. Official transcripts must be sent to the admission office.
• Await an email to see if you have been selected by the Selection Committee.
• Return your acceptance letter.

Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) have various career opportunities in healthcare settings, including:

• Hospitals – Providing bedside care, administering medications, and assisting registered nurses (RNs) and doctors.
• Long-Term Care Facilities – Working in nursing homes, assisted living centers, and rehabilitation facilities to care for elderly and disabled patients.
• Home Health Care – Delivering medical care to patients in their homes, including wound care and medication management.
• Clinics and Physician Offices – Assisting with patient exams, administering injections, and handling medical records.
• Correctional Facilities – Providing medical care to inmates in jails or prisons.
• Occupational Health – Working in businesses or industrial settings to support employee health and safety.
• School Nursing – Assisting with student health needs in K-12 schools or colleges.
• Hospice and Palliative Care – Supporting patients with terminal illnesses and providing comfort care.

LVNs can also pursue further education to become Registered Nurses (RNs) or specialize in areas such as IV therapy, wound care, or dialysis.

The estimated cost for Coastal Bend College’s Vocational Nursing Program varies based on residency status:

• In-District Students: Total program cost is approximately $9,474.
• Out-of-District Students: Total program cost is around $12,636.
• Out-of-State Students: Total program cost is about $13,401.

These estimates include tuition, fees, supplies, and additional costs such as books, uniforms, medical equipment, NCLEX testing fees, and pre-admission expenses like background checks and drug screenings.
