Program Description and Details

Nursing is a dynamic and constantly changing profession. The ability to encompass care of individuals, families, communities, and populations requires a strong commitment to study in the field of nursing. It is our commitment to prepare graduates to provide safe, competent, and compassionate care. Coastal Bend College has a variety of pathways to achieve students’ career goals.

Nurse Aide – Certified Nurse Aides (CNA) play a pivotal role in the care of patients. Nurse Aides assist patients with the activities of daily living such as eating and bathing. They are the eyes and ears for the nurses they work in collaboration with. Students will learn to provide basic patient care – bathing, feeding, grooming: acquire, distribute, and administer patient care supplies; perform safety checks and ensure cleanliness of patient rooms; accommodate the special needs of patients; and provide emotional support.
Patient Care Technician – Patient Care Technicians (PCT) are crucial healthcare professionals who play a vital role in assisting nurses and other medical staff in providing care to patients. Students will learn to provide basic patient care - bathing, feeding, catheter care: acquire, distribute, and administer patient care supplies; perform safety checks and ensure cleanliness of patient rooms; accommodate the special needs of patients; obtain EKG reading and monitor vital signs; perform phlebotomy procedures; and provide emotional support.
Vocational Nursing – Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) care for patients in collaboration with a healthcare team (RN and Physicians) in a variety of settings. In the Vocational Nursing (VN) Program, students will learn to provide patient care – administering medications, providing treatments, assessing patient needs, and providing emotional support.

Prospective Careers:

Nurse Aide – Certified Nurse Aides can work within a hospital and long-term care facility.
Patient Care Technician – Patient Care Technicians can work within a hospital, clinic, long-term care facility, or home health care.
Vocational Nursing – Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) can work within a school, hospital, clinic, long-term care facility, or home health care.
